Pets in our Neighborhood

McKenzie

The Crawford’s own McKenzie. She is a Lhasa Apsos.
McKenzie's parents did not know she would be such a "Watchdog" outdoors!  And they apologize for her "out of control barking" when you pass by. Inside the fence, she will be your best friend. When you pass by, check out the bay window, where a squirrel sits daily in the bird tray, with McKenzie sitting indoors, going nose to nose with only the window separating them.

Honey

Honey is an orange tabby cat, Katie Wolf owns Honey. Katie got Honey at the Humane Society when she was five weeks old. Most of Honey’s days are spent in the barn looking for mice. Honey is an outside cat that loves her family.

Skeeter

Skeeter is a white and orange cat, owned by the Hudson family. Skeeter likes to hunt everything, rabbits, mice and birds especially. Skeeter was a stray that showed up at their house and was welcomed into the family. Skeeter sleeps with Nick (the youngest kid), but isn’t much of a lap cat unless, he is tired.

Gardening Tips

What plants attract hummingbirds?

Photo: By choosing certain plants you can actually increase the chances of having these little acrobats of the garden around. Whether they are annuals, perennials, tropical, or vines the hummingbird will find something to sip nectar from in all categories. P. Allen Smith  (The Weather Channel) planted honeysuckle about four years ago on his front fence and it's one of the first things to flower in the spring that really gets the humming bird's attention. They go for the scarlet coral colored flowers. They love the tubular shape. Coral honeysuckle or sometimes referred to as scarlet honeysuckle is actually an American native vine and it will really turn their heads.

Among the annual flowers you might think about planting there are morning glory, red salvia, even petunias. Perennials that are always a favorite include the blooms of hosts, cannas, penstimens, and bee balm. These are just a few of the plants to grow to entice and feed hummers. This spring when you are making additions to your garden, don't forget about the hummingbirds.

Bird-Safe Slug Catchers

Deter birds from your garden slug catchers by keeping a lid on them.  Fine Gardening

Have you ever seen a drunk bird? It flutters on one wing, cannot hold onto a branch, chirps loudly, and becomes vulnerable to cats. To keep your visiting birds from getting drunk on liquored slugs, you can keep the lid on beer-filled slug catchers, and trap slugs at the same time. First, cut two or three slug-sized holes, about 1/2 inch, in the upper side of a yogurt, honey, or margarine container. Pour in your beer to just under the holes, put on the lid, and put it out in the garden. The rain won't dilute the beer because the holes are on the side, and the birds won't get drunk.
