Barrel Pond, A very easy way to have a small pond and water plants! You can
have your very own water lily. (Miniature of course) A
barrel makes a very good, natural-looking container pond that associates
brilliantly with water plants. You
can use one on its own, or stand, say, three different sized barrels close
together in a corner of the patio, each filled with a different group of
plants, to make a bigger feature. To
make the most of the natural wood effect, try standing a barrel pond on
bricks or tiles amount shrubs in a woodland style border. It would look great with a smaller barrel,
too. You can get half barrels up to 3
ft across, 1 ½ ft diameter is a good size for a container pond, as it is more
movable. 1.Choose
a suitable half barrel and simply stand it in position on level ground. Fill with water. To stop a barrel from leaking, soak it in water for a long time
to make the wood swell up. It will
also draw out toxins remaining in the wood from other items it held. Look for one at the garden center that is
full of water. If you do get one that
leaks, you can seal the seams with silicon, then paint the inside with black
bitumastic (boat) paint. 2.
Put plants in pond pots. For a barrel
this size use one miniature water lily, two oxgenators and three marginal
plants. Choose more compact
marginals, such as Calla palustris (bog arum) and Sagitaria japonica. For oxgenators use starwort or water
violet. Stand the marginal plants on
upturned pots so that the right depth of water covers their roots. After two weeks, when everything has
settled down, add two small, colorful goldfish, following the same technique
as when introducing fish into a normal pond. From Water Garden Workbook, by Charlie
Dimmock. |
