Borders

Good or Bad?

Borders is now open in the Cannery Mall. I have been in Borders and it is very nice bookstore. It is more convenient having CD’s and books right there for you. But have you ever seen You’ve got Mail? It is a movie where the small independent bookstore gets bought out by a very large chain bookstore. This doesn’t sound fair,

well that is what might happen if too many people go to Borders and not our local bookstores. There is a very important meeting this Monday evening, August 20th from 7 to 9 pm at the Corvallis-Benton County Library where they will talk about the issues of what that will happen with Borders in town.

Drive-In Theater

I saved the best thing off the 11 things to do list from last week, the Drive-In theater in Lebanon. It is $9 for a carload and $6 for a senior’s carload a limit of 6 adults per carload extras cost $2ea.The movies play Weds-Sunday and it is a double feature. The show starts at dusk and anyone under 18 must be with an adult. This week they are showing Jurassic Park 3 and Planet of The Apes. When I go to the drive in we take our pick-up truck with a mattress in the back and park it in backwards, then we lay down sleeping bags and pillows, but some people put lawn chairs in the back of their truck instead. They have candy, popcorn and pop for a lot less than the regular theaters. If you leave at 7:30 you will get there on time, on Saturday leave earlier because it gets really busy. This is a fun thing to do before the summer is over.

Rich S'mores
Take the classic s'more to a new level! Homemade oatmeal cookies, rich chocolate and marshmallows. The campground classic will never be the same. 4 servings.

Ingrediants:

8 large oatmeal cookies
1/4 pound milk chocolate

8 marshmallows

Directions:
1 Lightly oil grill and preheat to high.
2 Place 1 ounce of chocolate on the flat side of 4 of the oatmeal cookies. Skewer the marshmallows and roast them, turning constantly, until they are a golden brown all over.

Gardening

  Pots with Pizzazz

Who needs a garden when you can have pots filled with flowers spilling over the edges? With new and trendy choices, container gardening is bigger than ever. We've come a long way since the days of just geraniums and petunias. Now you can try unusual combinations and create your own miniature landscapes. A helpful hint: design your arrangements around the colors, tone and feel of the pot.

First, find yourself a container and bring it with you when you go shopping for your plants. I found an old beehive box at an antique store that had some blue-greens, some peachy salmon colors, pastels, and some blues and purples to play with. Based on that, I went to the nursery and came up with a collection of plants. For example, to complement the blue-green colors, I chose helichrysum, lotus vine, and blue oat grass. For some soft purples, I chose brachycome, spiderwort, and some verbena. And then for yellows: incarvillea mixed with vinca vine - to cascade over the edge. And finally, for the salmon, I found a beautiful verbena to keep the flow. It all came together when I put it in the pot!

Once you have your plants and are ready to go, start by filling your pot 1/4 full with potting soil. I suggest using a potting soil that is fairly light; the plants may do better with a little garden soil thrown in. In addition, you can use water polymers called "soil moist". They help the plants thrive on hot summer days. I like to moisten the polymers first before I add them to soil. Then finish filling your container halfway and you're ready to add the plants.

For this step, you really want to pack in the plants so you get a beautiful, dramatic display. I always like to start with the tallest plant first. Just remember, it doesn't always have to go in the center. Then start packing in your annuals, mixing colors and textures as you go. Be sure to keep the trailing plants to the outside edge. When you're done planting, you may need to add a little soil to fill in the holes around the plants. Keep it watered, and remember to feed it once a week with a water-soluble fertilizer. I like to use it at about 50% strength. The flowers will continue to bloom and grow- just wait until it takes off!
