Mr. Boogeyman…Continued By: Mo Rogers Mr.
Boogeyman seemed to be hungrier as time went on. Every scrap of food left at
bedtime was gone by morning. It wouldn’t be long before he was so fat that he
would push up through the mattress and fling me onto the floor. That would be
the end of me. I would be the last and largest meal that he would eat in the
Hathaway basement bedroom. I just knew it. According
to my father, Steff let out the loudest scream in the history of noise, the
night that she moved upstairs. Behind Jeremy’s dresser was a brown rat,
fatter than our late cat Franklin, with one of those long, wiry rat tails. He was lying there between the old Grateful
Dead posters and empty Twinky wrappers.
Dad came in for the removal operation while Steff and Mom cried in the
kitchen. I stayed clear and took my chances with Mr. Boogeyman and the lights
on in my room. By
the next night things in the Hathaway household had calmed down. Steff sat at
the end of my bed and tried to comfort me.
“You’re safe here without me now.” She whispered and pointed under the
bed. “That ugly brown rat polished off Mr. Boogeyman, I know it. That’s why
that ugly thing was so fat!” And Steff was right about that, too. Just like
she always is. Mr. Boogeyman was gone. I quit feeding him and the noises
never returned. And the flying leap thing…well I still do
that…just in case. The
end. How about a Neighborhood Garage Sale and

As part of Quilt County Events 2001 in
Benton County, an event called Quilts in
Corvallis Gardens Will
be held Saturday, September 8, 2001, Quilts will be hung in five
splendid gardens around the city, creating an enjoyable atmosphere of texture
and color in fabric and flower. The addresses of the five gardens are: 5610 SW Cherry St; 4725 NW Sonja Place;
3010 NW Taft; 3525 NW Roosevelt; and 2045 NW Dogwood. The tour is self guided and the hours are 11:00
am – 4:00 pm. Organized by Nena Bement. I
attended this event last year and was amazed and inspired by both the quilts
and our beautiful local gardens. Some
of the gardeners were available for questions about their choice of plant
material and garden design. I hope
you will all be able to take time this Saturday to see our “Benton County
Artists”. Other
events will be held through October 6th all over Corvallis. A copy of these events can be picked up at
the Library or JanniLou Creations on Main St. Philomath. Submitted by Paula
